Hand in Hand Crossing for Inclusion: A Milestone Event for WA Football
In a heartwarming display of unity and support, Western Australia witnessed a historic event that transcended the boundaries of sports and community. Sunday the 9th of July 2023 the inaugural "Hand in Hand Crossing for Inclusion" brought together a diverse group of individuals, all rallying behind the cause of disability inclusion. The event, organised in partnership between Starkick, the WA All Abilities Football Association, Purple Hands Foundation and Fremantle Football Club, marked a turning point in the way the community perceives disability and inclusion, emphasizing that everyone has a place in the world of footy and beyond.
For the very first time, a procession of nearly a thousand people, young and old, crossed the iconic Matagarup Bridge hand in hand, symbolizing their commitment to inclusion. The bridge, known for its stunning views of Perth, transformed into a symbol of unity, with the smiles on the faces of children and adults alike lighting up the day.
The Hand in Hand Crossing for Inclusion event was not just about the world of sports; it was about the entire community coming together to celebrate diversity and advocate for inclusivity. This was evident in the overwhelming turnout, which exceeded all expectations. Over 100 young footballers from the Starkick program took part in the bridge crossing, accompanied by prominent figures from the AFL, including Fremantle Dockers CEO Simon Garlick and WA Football Commission chair Wayne Martin.
Starkick coordinator Rob Geersen, reflecting on the event, emphasized the significance of the day: "It's a chance to make a statement... in football, everyone's welcome in our game. Today we showed that." This sentiment reverberated throughout the event, echoing the belief that inclusion knows no boundaries, be it on the footy field or within the broader community.
The Hand in Hand Crossing for Inclusion was a powerful reminder that disability inclusion is not an isolated issue but an integral part of creating a more welcoming and compassionate society. It highlighted the fact that when people of all backgrounds join hands, they can achieve incredible feats and send a message of acceptance that resonates far beyond the event itself.
