Mark Clayton recongised with WA Volunteer of the Year honour
Mark Clayton, a dedicated Starkick coach and coordinator at Quinns Districts Junior Football Club, has been named the 2024 Disability Inclusion Ambassador Volunteer of the Year for Western Australia.
A Year 9 coach and active committee member at the club, Mark’s journey into inclusive football began with a simple decision — to ensure every child had the opportunity to play.
“Mark is one amazing person. Not having any kids of his own with a disability, he saw a story on the Starkick program and decided he would be the one at Quinns to ensure that all kids would be able to play football,” his nomination reads.
Four years ago, Mark approached the club committee with a proposal to launch Starkick at Quinns Districts. With their support, he became the club’s inaugural Starkick Coordinator.
Starting with just four registered participants, Mark set his sights higher. Through his energy, persistence and genuine passion for inclusion, the program has grown significantly — with close to 30 Starkick players now registered at the club.
“Mark’s commitment, enthusiasm and passion ensures the program is a huge success for our club. The smiles on the children and parents’ faces are proof of how successful Starkick is.
“Mark likes to make sure every child is given a fair go and is having fun. Even if a child is feeling down, he lifts them up with a smile and a laugh — and sometimes even a piggyback.
“His passion to have every child feel included in every aspect of football sees him continue in this role year after year.”
The WA Football Commission award originated in Western Australia and has since been adopted nationally, attracting nearly 1,350 nominations across the State last year.
WAFC Executive Manager – Junior, Youth and Community Football, Troy Kirkham, said he was continually inspired by the volunteers who power community football.
“There are over 45,000 volunteers supporting community football clubs across WA week in and week out,” he said.
Each District and Region selects one finalist per category, with one nominee from each District and Region recognised at the prestigious Sandover Medal.
