Starkick Schools Carnival - A day to shine
The 2025 Starkick Schools Carnival brought WA Education support school communities together in a way that only footy, when delivered with a whole lot of heart - can. Now the largest inclusive schools AFL carnival in Australia, this year’s event welcomed 266 students from 15 Education Support primary schools for a day overflowing with energy, teamwork and endless smiles.
A number of schools ined the carnival for the very first time including Mosman Park School for Deaf Children, and Avonvale Education Support Centre, whose students and staff travelled an incredible 220km round trip from Northam just to be part of the experience.
Their enthusiasm set the tone for a day that reminded everyone why inclusion isn’t just a word - it’s something we live together.
“Many places promote themselves for inclusivity but don’t really operate that way,” shared Monique from Mosman Park School for Deaf Children. “This event is exactly what it says. Every one of our students felt included and engaged. They had so much fun and are already looking forward to next year.”
For Avonvale ESC, the day was equally powerful.- “We had such a great time…and are looking forward to next year! Can not fault a thing!” said Tanya. Her colleague Natanja added, “We appreciate the small details like the coffee for staff, the fruit area, and the activities in-between the games. It helped the day remain busy and active for the students. The timing helped us Northam folks out a lot!”
First-time schools loved it. First-time staff loved it too. “My first time as an EA. LOVED every minute,” said Michelle from Gwynne Park ESC. “The inclusivity from students, staff and all event coordinator, a fantastic day we all really enjoyed.”
And the spirit of giving back shone brightly through the SEDA student coaches. “The students were fabulous… SEDA were fab,” said Tanya from Avonvale ESC, also reflecting on the pride of seeing her former Penrhos students now mentoring others.
Another highlight was seeing students and staff from Beldon Education Support Centre proudly wearing their brand-new football jumpers — created after they won the 2024 Starkick Design-a-Jumper Competition.
The winning designer, Vinh, stood proudly alongside his classmates in the jumper he created, chosen from a strong field of entries from Education Support students across the state. Seeing his design come to life on the field was a moment of joy shared by all.
In a day centred on teamwork, belonging, and kindness, the Starkick Perpetual Shield, judged by the SEDA student coaches against Starkick’s values of Teamwork, Respect, Generosity, Care and Safety – was proudly awarded to Castlereagh School for 2025.
The carnival continues to grow, continues to inspire, and continues to open doors a little wider every year.
